In 1927, under the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act, the country was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In the 19th century, thanks to colonial conquests, it became one of the largest, most influential, and economically developed countries in the world; it acquired the unofficial name of the British Empire.

Ilona Kyriokatis,

...You are confusing Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland...

In 1949, Ireland was declared an independent republic. The republic's withdrawal from the British Commonwealth was announced. In 1973, Ireland became a member of the European Union.
